A warm welcome to everyone who has joined Year 1 this year. The children have had a wonderful start to the term and have settled brilliantly into the routines of Key Stage 1.This week, we are launching our exciting new topic, 'Toys in Space'. Our English learning will be linked to both toys and space, with the children enjoying a range of engaging texts to inspire their reading and writing. They will be practising writing simple sentences about characters and events in the stories, whilst exploring different adjectives to make their writing more interesting and descriptive. This half term, we are focusing on saying a sentence aloud before writing it, using finger spaces between words and reading back our writing to check it makes sense. In Maths, the children will be reading and writing numbers, finding one more and one less than a given number, counting on from different starting points and comparing numbers. In History, we will be learning about toys from the past and present, exploring how toys have changed over time and comparing similarities and differences between the toys children played with then and now. In Art, we will be exploring the colour wheel and learning about colour mixing. The children will use these skills to create space-themed artwork inspired by Joe Van Wetering in the coming weeks. We are looking forward to an exciting half term filled with imagination, creativity and discovery as we journey through our 'Toys in Space' topic!
