Governors’ Newsletter

Dear Parents,

Well here we are in a brand new year and a new term at HVS!  Welcome back – we hope that you are all rested and have had a happy Christmas holiday.

To enable us to fulfil our role as Governors of The Horsell Village School effectively, we need to listen to the views of all the stakeholders.  At the end of the Summer Term, we invited you to complete our annual parent survey – many thanks to all of you who did so and for your suggestions for improvement.  100% agreed/strongly agreed that their child enjoyed school and that school is helping their child to become mature and responsible, 99% agreed/strongly agreed that the school expects their child to work hard and achieve his/her best and 98% agreed/strongly agreed that the school is well led and managed.  The lowest score was for understanding the role of the governing body so clearly we need to do some work on explaining what the Governors do!

Briefly, the Governing Body as a whole is responsible for making decisions regarding staffing, curriculum, buildings and finance. We help interview new staff, consider and agree curriculum changes and monitor the standards that our children achieve. We help, support, challenge and question.

A large part of our role is to be a critical friend and to help Elaine Cooper and the team set the direction and tone of the school as well as making sure all the necessary policies and procedures are in place and adhered to.  As a critical friend we ask the questions we believe you, as parents, would ask. We also decide how the budget should be spent and regularly monitor the expenditure. We ask, over any decision, “How will this help the children of The Horsell Village School?”

The Governing Body of HVS consists of ten Governors, including Mrs Child who is our Staff Representative.  Three of our Governors are parents of children who are currently at the school, and nearly all of us have had children at the school.  We come from all different walks of life and have a variety of different skill sets which we match to the committees that we sit on.  If you would like to know what we all look like please visit the ‘Meet the Governors’ section of the Parents Information page on the school website!

This term I will be hijacking Mrs Cooper’s monthly newsletter with a section for Governors’ News.  I intend to give you some insight in to the two committees (‘Resources’ and ‘Children and Learning’) that meet half termly and the sorts of things that we discuss.  I hope that by doing this I can help to keep parents more informed of the sorts of things that the Governors of HVS are up to in terms of supporting and challenging the school with a long term goal of helping everyone to be more aware of the role of the governing body.  If there are any areas that you feel you would like me to address then please do not hesitate to contact me via the school office.

In the meantime, I’d like to wish all of our families a happy and healthy 2018 and a successful Spring Term.

Kind regards

Helen Fox, Chair of Governors
